Stainless Steel Bird Cages

Stainless steel bird cages are the usual choice for pet bird owners. However, if you read our take on the right bird cages you will understand why we favor the natural version.

When you bring home your first pet bird, chances are high that you also buy a stainless steel bird cage at the same time. While they are said to be more hygienic and clean, we end to disagree with that opinion. In fact, we also used a stainless steel bird cage for our first cockatiel and over time the cage started to rust.

If the bird picks on the rust - and he will, you don't do him a favor either. A wooden bird cage can be just as hygienic if you abide by basic cleaning rules.

Leaving the cage dirty for weeks at the time is disgusting and will hurt your bird. He can get fleas, mites and other bugs.

A good way to clean the cage properly is with hot water and then rub lemon or vinegar over the wooden perches to kill any bacteria that might linger. This is also safe for your bird and won't harm him. Try to stay clear of aggressive cleaning formulas to clean the stainless steel bird cage. Even those from the bird shop are far too aggressive.

Go natural and keep your bird healthy. This is part of your basic pet bird care. If you so must buy a stainless steel bird cage, then be sure to at least buy one that is big enough to host your bird. If you have several birds, take this into consideration.

Below you see a typical example of a stainless steel bird cage that is far too small (left hand side) and one that is just acceptable (righ hand side).

Bird cages come in so many varieties that it is hard to see through all the clutter and choose a right one. If you keep this in mind, you will do your pet bird justice:

  • Small bird: medium size bird cage
  • Medium bird: large size bird cage
  • Large bird: Xtra-large bird cage

Keep in mind that you wouldn't want to live in a small cramped room for the rest of your life either.
