Bird Toys
What are the right bird toys for you pet bird care
and how can you be sure they are safe to use? Find out
below.
Bird toys are commonly used by pet bird owners to help their
pets execute their natural instinct to nibble, bite and play
with things. By providing your bird with bird toys you can also
avoid the threaded chewing on skirting boards, doors, furniture
and other wooden bits in your house.
Let's face it, birds simply love chewing and you find out
soon enough if you are an avid reader. Your once treasured
books and magazines will get chewed to bits unless you give
your birds other things to play with like bird toys.
As owners of cockatiels and earlier in
our lives an African Grey we
can attest to the fact that they really love to chew on things.
Although cockatiels and other
smaller pet birds are less inclined to chew furniture, bigger
parrots certainly do.
Provide them with a handmade or store bought bird tree and
you will see a vast improvement in your birds behavior.
Pet bird care also involves giving
your bird enough things to play with safely without risk to
their safety. Bird owners are usually worried whether
something is safe or not and therefore you are always well
advised to go with a store bought bird toy opposed to doing
it yourself - unless you are familiar with pet birds.
You can find some information on bird toys on
our bird supplies page
which will also show you some recommended sources to buy
your toys from. One thing you should always remember, is
to buy your toys from a trusted source. Sometimes you get
manufacturers of toys which are less than safe for your
pet bird just by saving a couple of dollars.
If the health of your bird is important to you (and it
should), then do yourself and the bird a favor and buy decent
toys.
Usually birds like soft toys with lots of tassels which they
can chew to bits. If you do provide a toy like this, make sure
the tassels are dyed with bird safe colors. Bird toys with
bells on them are also favoured by many bird species.
Bird toys also involve ladders, rings, swings, bird trees
and mobiles. The idea is to create a peaceful and safe
environment to make your pet feel right at home.
